Sargasso is a serious problem for Caribbean coastlines!

WHY IS THERE SO MUCH SARGASSO IN THE CARIBBEAN?

A combination of warmer water temperatures, massive pollution, northern currents, and ashes from Africa have all intensified over the last decade creating longer and denser sargasso blooms. The bloom cycles that feed what is known as the “Sargasso Sea”, (north of Bermuda) are now smothering communities throughout the Caribbean.

This “super” seaweed is destroying reefs, tarnishing turquoise waters, and sand, eroding coastlines, ruining tourism, and endangering both public health and delicate ecosystems. Over the last decade, the amount of sargasso has increased, the seasons are starting sooner, and lasting longer.

WHAT IS CAUSING COASTAL EROSION?

Cleaning efforts have been very difficult due to the massive amounts and longer season cycles. Unfortunately, sargasso is often captured after it reaches the beach and comes into contact with sand. Once removed it carries almost half of its weight in sand, effectively eroding the same coastlines that we are trying to protect. What if we can capture the sargasso “before” it makes contact with sand and push it directly into containers on the shore using a pump?

HOW SARGAFUNNEL™ WORKS

SargaFunnel™ pushes sargasso underwater and into a hoe connected to a pump.
SargaFunnel™ captures sargasso before reaching the shore.

The type of sargasso most commonly found in the Caribbean has no roots and can float thousands of kilometers in a very short time. This makes it hard to capture and control. Our goal is to accumulate it and pump it directly from the water, pushing it using rotor pumps to safe areas where it can be processed for many other uses. This effectively transforms what otherwise would be considered biowaste into a natural resource.

SARGAFUNNEL™ SYSTEM

We designed our funnel to work alongside a pump that captures seaweed directly from the water before it can reach the sand and erode the beach. The SargaFunnel™ keeps your hose underwater so it will never lose suction, and has the power to gather sargasso for more efficient capture. It is equipped with a high-quality hose handle, a PVC nozzle, and a coupler to fit your 3-inch / 7.6 cm [OR] 4-inch / 10.1 cm hose.

Stop struggling with rakes and toxic leachates. Don’t wait for sargasso to reach your beach, capture it fresh and protect delicate ecosystems from the harmful effects of decomposition. Once sargasso arrives on the sand, it is much more difficult to remove. Instead, vacuum the Ocean with SargaFunnel™!
